The East Kimberley Aboriginal Achievement Awards (EKAAAs) will light up the Kununurra Picture Gardens on Saturday, 9 August 2025, shining a spotlight on the outstanding achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the region.
Held every two years, the EKAAAs is more than an awards night - it’s a powerful celebration of culture, leadership, and community spirit. From education to enterprise, from art to advocacy, the event honours those who go above and beyond to uplift and inspire.
Nominations are now open and will close on 7 July 2025. Wunan Foundation encourages the East Kimberley community to submit as many nominations as possible.
“Many local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people contribute to our region through community service, education, music, art, culture, the environment, sport, employment, and politics,” said Wunan CEO Prue Jenkins.
“If you know someone who deserves to be recognised, we encourage you to complete a nomination form and share their story. Anyone can nominate, so long as the person or organisation fits the category criteria.”
The awards acknowledge a broad range of contributions through the following categories - the “Abbey Forrest” Aboriginal Emerging Leader Award, Aboriginal Elder of the Year, Outstanding Aboriginal Individual Contributor to Culture and Community, Outstanding Contribution to Aboriginal Education, Employment, Training and Disability Services, Aboriginal Business Enterprise of the Year, Aboriginal Affairs Champion of the Year, and Aboriginal Person of the Year. Recognition is also extended to allies through the Non-Aboriginal Person of the Year and Non-Aboriginal Organisation of the Year awards.
As the countdown to August begins, Wunan is also calling for volunteers to be part of the night’s magic. Whether helping set up under the stars or supporting with event duties on the evening, volunteers will have the chance to contribute behind the scenes while soaking up the spirit of this special celebration.
The EKAAA brings together the East Kimberley community to celebrate those who lead with heart, lift others up, and shape a stronger future. It's a night of pride, storytelling, and inspiration - a tribute to those making a real difference.
Further details, including how to nominate or register your interest as a volunteer, are available via Wunan’s website and social media channels.
