Still on Track

Building Skills, Confidence and Positive Pathways

Still on Track is a 10-week youth engagement and skills development program helping young people in the East Kimberley build confidence, resilience and practical life skills through hands-on learning, mentorship and culturally safe support.

Developed by Wunan Foundation, the program was created in response to school disengagement, limited employment pathways and youth crime, providing young people with structured opportunities to develop skills and reconnect with education, training and employment.

Learning Through Practical Experience

At the heart of the program is hands-on learning. Participants work alongside mentors and trainers to build their own electric scooter from the ground up while learning welding, fabrication and practical workshop skills.

The scooter becomes a powerful symbol of the journey participants undertake throughout the program. At the end of the 10 weeks, participants are able to take their completed scooter home as a reminder of the skills, confidence and achievements they have built along the way.

Still on Track combines practical training with activities designed to expose young people to new opportunities and experiences.

Participants have taken part in:

  • First Aid and White Card training
  • The East Kimberley Employment & Careers Expo
  • Financial literacy sessions with Wunan's Finance Hub team
  • On-Country fishing trips at Keep River
  • Weaving and carving workshops with OVAHS
  • Agricultural learning experiences with DPIRD
  • ID document support to prepare for future training opportunities
  • Music and goal-setting workshops with Indigenous hip-hop artist J-MILLA

These experiences help participants build confidence, life skills and a clearer understanding of future education and employment pathways.

Real Outcomes

The inaugural Still on Track program delivered strong outcomes for participating young people.

In 2025:

  • 7 young people successfully completed the program
  • 2 participants transitioned into employment
  • All participants completed First Aid and White Card training
  • The program recorded zero police interactions during the 10-week delivery period

These outcomes reflect the impact of providing young people with practical skills, positive role models and meaningful opportunities to succeed.
