The Wunan Foundation has successfully been awarded a three-year extension to continue delivering Headspace to the Kununurra community until June 2026.
The program has proved an invaluable initiative for the Kimberley community, supporting young people aged 12-25 through four key focus areas, these being mental health, physical and sexual health, alcohol and other drugs, and vocational training/educational support.
Headspace is Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation, providing early intervention mental health services and supporting thousands of young people access vital support services. The Kununurra centre acts as a one-stop shop for young people in our community with mental health and wellbeing concerns, and provides no (or low) cost, youth friendly, holistic care.
Recent program stats from August to October 2023 saw Headspace Kununurra grow its reach to help 33 new young people and provide upward of 80 counselling sessions during this time. 81.8% of support services were also delivered to people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander ethnicity.
The headspace Kununurra team understand that Indigenous Australians face may different types of trauma and in an effort to help them heal, provide dedicated support services focused on overcoming trauma at the individual level (such as abuse, neglect, or family separation), the household level (for example witnessing violence or self-harm), and the societal level (including dispossession and dislocation, racism, social exclusion, and the experiences of the Stolen Generations).
The Wunan Foundation are incredibly proud to continue delivering this crucial support service to our young people living in the East Kimberley, equipping them with the resources necessary to help them heal and begin to change their life trajectory.
