Wunan Foundation is proud to announce Celeste Hunter of Kununurra as the recipient of the 2026 Wunan East Kimberley Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Scholarship, delivered in partnership with Pilbara Kimberley University Centres (PKUC).
Currently studying a Bachelor of Social Work through Edith Cowan University while raising four children, Celeste was awarded the $10,000 scholarship in recognition of her commitment to continuing her education while balancing study, family responsibilities and life in the East Kimberley.
“Receiving this scholarship means a lot to me, it's actually hard to put into words. It is a wonderful surprise and has empowered me to continue my studies with confidence and less stress. Receiving this recognition solidifies the belief I have in myself and will encourage me to continue on the right path for my education, employment and future. I am very grateful to Wunan and PKUC for the opportunity and support.”
PKUC’s scholarship program reached its largest scale to date in 2026, with 114 scholarships valued at $240,500 supported by 25 industry, government and community stakeholders.
The program attracted more than 190 applications, highlighting both the strong demand for higher education in the region and the significant pressures students face in meeting the costs of tuition, travel and placements.
“Scholarships play a critical role in ensuring students can pursue higher education without having to leave their communities,” Ms Grylls, Chief Executive Officer of the Pilbara and Kimberley University Centres said. “They reduce financial barriers and support students to complete their qualifications, helping build a pipeline of skilled, local people who contribute to the region.”

Celeste’s journey reflects the strength and determination within our communities, and this scholarship helps remove barriers so she can pursue her passion in social work while continuing to support her family and community.”
