Wunan Foundation and Cyrenian House are incredibly proud and grateful to have received the Partnership Award at the 2026 Strong Spirit Strong Mind Awards for our work together to establish the Kununurra Withdrawal and Intervention Centre (KWIC).

The award recognises partnerships that make a positive contribution to addressing alcohol and other drug issues within Aboriginal communities.

Established through a partnership between Wunan Foundation and Cyrenian House that began in 2022, KWIC was created to address a significant gap in access to withdrawal services in the East Kimberley. Cyrenian House brought extensive experience in low-medical withdrawal services, working alongside our team at the Wunan Foundation to help develop the service model, facility, workforce, governance and systems needed to establish a sustainable local service.

Since opening in 2024, KWIC has provided people in the East Kimberley with access to safe, culturally responsive alcohol and other drug withdrawal support closer to home, family and Country.

KWIC is Western Australia’s first Aboriginal community-controlled low-medical withdrawal service. The six-bedroom facility provides a safe and supportive environment where people can stabilise before further treatment, while also supporting people experiencing co-occurring mental health concerns. Its holistic approach is focused not only on withdrawal, but on supporting longer-term wellbeing and recovery.

Receiving the Partnership Award is a wonderful acknowledgement of what can be achieved when Aboriginal community leadership and specialist clinical expertise come together through a shared commitment to better outcomes.

Wunan Foundation is incredibly grateful to Cyrenian House for the knowledge, commitment and support it has brought to the partnership, and to the staff, community members and supporters who have contributed to KWIC and its work in the East Kimberley.
